Preventive screening for cervical cancer

All women between the ages of 23 and 64 are offered the opportunity to be tested, if there are indications of changes in the cervix.

If you choose to participate, the procedure is:

  • Please request an appointment for the screening through your general practitioner (Kommunulækni)
  • The results of the screening will be sent to your general practitioner. Therefore, you and your practitioner should arrange how you will receive the result.

Cell changes can be present for a long time before they develop into actual cancer. With a simple test at the general practitioner's, a small sample can be taken from the cervix to examine for cell changes. Long before anything is noticible, changes may occur in the cells, and can only be seen under a microscope. For this reason, women aged 23 – 29 are invited for screening every three years, and women aged 30 – 64 are invited every five years.

All women aged 23 – 64 will receive an invitation letter from the National Hospital of The Faroe Islands (Landssjúkrahúsið), reminding them that it is time for a new screening with their own general practitioner.

Call your general practioner to book an appointment. If you have not received an invitation letter, you should call the National Hospital at phone nr. 304518 between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM and inform, that you have not received an invitation.

If you do not wish to participate in the screening, please send an email to labinfo@ls.fo. You will recieve a reminder, if you either do not accept the offer or report back, that you do not wish to participate.

If you are experiencing symptoms in the lower abdomen, you should contact your general practitioner.
